Music has a unique way of touching our hearts. Whether it's a lullaby, a favorite song, or watching your child proudly play their first recital piece, music becomes part of our family's story.
While many people think of music therapy as something new, researchers have been studying the benefits of music for decades. And the exciting news is that many of those same benefits can come from simply learning to play an instrument.
Studies consistently show that children who take music lessons strengthen memory, focus, problem-solving, and even reading and math skills. Playing an instrument challenges both the logical and creative parts of the brain, helping children grow in ways that extend far beyond music.
The emotional benefits are just as important. Music has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and help manage anxiety. Children who stick with music often develop greater confidence, independence, and resilience as they work through challenges and celebrate their progress.
Sadly, many adults stop making music after childhood, leaving behind an activity that once brought them joy and so many lifelong benefits.
As parents, we have the opportunity to change that story for our children. Encourage them to stay with their lessons, perform in recitals, join school or church music groups, and simply enjoy playing at home. The lessons they learn won't just help them become better musicians—they'll help them become more confident, capable, and well-rounded people.
And who knows? Maybe it's the perfect time for us as parents to rediscover the joy of making music, too.
Keep it up and enjoy music! Dawn Elmer, Academy Director
