Why Recitals Are Good for Kids

The weather is warming up, flowers are blooming, and then suddenly it hits: “The recital is coming up!” For some parents, that thought brings excitement. For others, it brings stress. But recitals are actually one of the most valuable parts of a child's music education.

First, recitals help children learn how to handle nervousness. Whether it's a few butterflies or significant stage fright, performing in a supportive environment teaches kids confidence, courage, and resilience—skills that benefit them far beyond music.

Second, recitals teach children how to recover from mistakes. No performance is perfect, and learning to keep going after a mistake is an important life skill. Children discover that mistakes don't define them and that perseverance matters more than perfection.

Third, recitals create a sense of community. Students see that they are part of something bigger than themselves. They perform alongside other young musicians who have also been practicing and preparing, creating friendships and a shared sense of accomplishment.

Fourth, preparing for a recital develops discipline and work ethic. Learning a piece well takes consistent practice, patience, and effort. These habits often carry over into school, sports, and other areas of life.

Finally, recitals provide a wonderful opportunity for parents and children to work toward a common goal together. Encouraging practice, celebrating progress, and supporting a child through the process strengthens relationships and creates lasting memories.

So instead of viewing the upcoming recital as something to worry about, consider it an opportunity. Recitals help children grow not only as musicians, but as confident, resilient, and disciplined young people.

We are looking forward to hearing our students perform in the upcoming June Recitals, June 26th, 27th, and 28th!

Keep making music. Dawn Elmer
